Sperry Mark XIV Gyro-Compass Q&A 1940s book HMS MV MENESTHEUS WW2 ship gyroscope
An old book of questions and answers about the theory, operation and maintenance of the Sperry Mark 14 Gyro-Compass.
Printed by H R Bohee & Sons, Brentford, in 1947 for the Sperry Gyroscope Company, Ltd.
The foreword says that the booklet is intended "primarily for the use of the officer responsible for the well-being of the Mark XIV Gyro-Compass on board ship....It is also hoped that it will be of considerable use to those officers who are preparing for Ministry of Transport examinations".
There is an inscription in the front, presumably the name and vessel of the original owner of the booklet.
The name is difficult to read, but I think it says:
M K Hopkins
M V Menestheus
The vessel referred to was a Blue Funnel liner which was requisitioned by the Royal Navy, as HMS Menestheus, for mine-laying work during the Second World War.
She was eventually returned to her peaceful life as a merchant vessel after the war had ended.
The booklet has 48 pages (plus one "separater page" to divide the questions from the answer section.
Good condition (used).
This booklet has clearly been well looked after.
The pages are clean and legible, without annotations.
Previous owner's name and vessel written inside.
The covers are a little creased, and discoloured with age, with one or two small stains.
A couple of printed errata (corrections) are pasted inside the front cover, as shown.
