French Breton wood box Picture of man on lid Vintage Quimper art c 1930s

A small wooden box, from Brittany.
I am not sure how old it is; it was given to my father, just after the Second World War, by the mayor of a small French town.
All four sides of the box have formal flowers carved into the wood, but the tour-de-force is the portrait of a man in Breton traditional costume on the lid.
He is wearing a Breton shirt, a be-ribboned hat, and an open jacket with braided edging.
He is smoking a pipe, and looks contented and restful.
Hinged lid.

This is an attractive piece of woodenware, in the Quimper style.
I am not sure if it was made as a cigarette or card box, or just a general trinket box.
I have put some odds and ends in one of the pictures, to give you an idea of the size of the box.  These are NOT included with the item.

Size (approximately):

6 inches x 4 inches

Just under 3 inches high.

Weight: 240g approx

Condition:

Fairly good condition, with a few surface marks and scuffs, from normal use.

The lid has curved slightly with age (see photographs), so that it does not sit quite flat on the box.

There is a little play in the hinges (possibly because of the warping of the lid?)

Some areas of the lid are lighter in colour than others; I do not know whether the box was always like this.

All in all, an unusual vintage item, decorative, practical and quite good enough for everyday use - except that the lid does not close tight, so I would not recommend you use it as a cigarette box.
